Assessly vs TestGorilla: an honest comparison

What each one costs to start

Assessly

From $29 a month

Or free: 20 answers a month

Starter is billed monthly and includes answers rather than credits; the pricing page has a calculator for your volume. No yearly lock-in on any self-serve plan.

TestGorilla

From $142 a month

Core plan, billed yearly only ($1,704 a year) with 250 candidate credits a year. Plus from $400 a month, also yearly. A free plan gives 10 credits a month and 5 tests.

Both prices as published by each company on the date the comparison was checked, in the currency they publish. TestGorilla may offer other terms on request; so do we above the Business plan.

  • 135 templates, written and reviewed

Every one is readable before you sign up: 103 role interviews, 5 job simulations, 26 screening questions and 1 behavioral inventory. Sample questions are on each template page.

    • Embracing Innovation
    • Handling Conflict
    • Navigating Ambiguity
    • Planning and Prioritizing
    • Self-Development
    • Strategic Perspective
  • Behavioral scoring per trait

The Big Five inventory uses forced ranking and scores each trait separately, so a report says which traits are strong rather than giving one number for the person.

Assessly and TestGorilla, side by side

Both columns are read at the first paid plan of each tool, ours at Starter for $29 a month, theirs at the plan named in the header. Our column comes from the plans the product enforces, so it cannot be tidied by hand. Theirs is read from their public pages on the date below. Where only a dearer plan carries something, the cell names that plan and its price. A question mark means we could not verify it there, not that it is missing.

Where TestGorilla is stronger

  • A library of more than 350 validated tests, including cognitive ability, language proficiency on the CEFR scale and typing, none of which Assessly has.
  • Camera snapshots, IP logging and optional ID verification, for a team that wants proctoring rather than signals.
  • Direct integrations with 18 applicant tracking systems on the Plus plan.
  • Conversational AI interviews with an avatar and dynamic follow-up questions.

Where Assessly is stronger

  • A monthly price with no yearly contract, and answers included instead of credits that expire.
  • Every template is readable in full before you sign up. TestGorilla shows samples and deliberately keeps the questions private.
  • The reasoning behind every score on every open answer, from the first candidate, with no rubric training required.
  • Assessments written in {languages} languages, not only the interface around them.
  • Job simulations and a behavioral inventory on every plan that can send a template, including free.
  • Code that runs against your test cases from the Pro plan, rather than only on the top tier.

So which one?

Pick TestGorilla if

You want a broad validated test library with cognitive and language tests, camera proctoring, and you are comfortable with a yearly contract and a credit budget.

Pick Assessly if

You want to read the questions before you pay, score open answers with the reasoning shown, send the assessment in the candidate language, and pay monthly for what you use.

How a test gets from here to a shortlist

  1. 1

Pick a template and read it

Open any of the 135 templates and read its questions before you commit to it. What you see is what a candidate gets.

  2. 2

    Edit what does not fit

Change wording, drop a question, add one of your own from 18 types. The template is a starting point, not a contract.

  3. 3

    Send one link

No account for the candidate, no install, no scheduled slot. They answer when they can.

  4. 4

    Read answers already scored

Each answer arrives with a score from 0 to 100 and the reasoning written out, on the Starter plan and above.

Worth asking of any test library

  • Can you read the actual questions before you pay, or only the description?
  • When a test gives a score, does it show why, per answer?
  • Who wrote the tests, and can you edit them once they are yours?
  • What happens to a candidate who runs out of time halfway through?

Where Assessly stops

  • Automatic scoring starts on the Starter plan. The free plan sends assessments and collects answers, and you read them yourself.
  • Assessly is built around the assessment. It has positions and a candidate pipeline from the Starter plan, but it is not a full applicant tracking system and does not try to be.

2 real questions

Taken from Legal Counsel. Questions with a recorded answer key are left out.

  1. 1.Short text

What is the name of the agreement, usually signed before commercial negotiations, that obliges the parties to keep the exchanged information confidential?

  2. 2.Short text

What is the name of the Brazilian law that addresses corporate liability for acts of corruption against public administration, also known as the Anti-Corruption Law?

Questions people ask us

Can I read the test questions before I pay?

Yes. Every one of the 135 templates has its own page with sample questions on it, before any account exists. Questions that carry a recorded answer key are held back, so reading a page cannot help anyone pass the test.

Does the free plan score answers automatically?

No. The free plan sends assessments and collects 20 answers a month, and you read them yourself. Automatic scoring starts on the Starter plan.

How does the behavioral test score a candidate?

The Big Five inventory uses forced ranking and scores each trait separately, so the report says which traits are strong rather than reducing the person to one number.

Can I edit a template after I copy it?

Yes. A copied template is yours: change the wording, remove a question, add your own from the 18 question types.

Is the assessment translated or only the interface?

The assessment itself. It can be written in 12 languages, so a team hiring across markets sends the same test in the language each candidate reads.

Does Assessly replace an applicant tracking system?

Not entirely. Assessly has positions and a candidate pipeline from the Starter plan, so a short hiring flow can live here. What it is built around is the assessment and the reasoning behind each score, and larger teams usually keep it alongside whatever already tracks their openings.

This is our own site, so read it that way. What we say about the other tool is read from its public pages on the date shown beside the table, with the sources linked, and we name where it beats us before we name where we win. Every number about Assessly is read from the product rather than written by hand. If we got something about them wrong, write to us and we will fix it.

Try it on one opening before you decide

Take a ready-made template, send the link to three candidates and read what comes back. 20 submissions a month cost nothing and need no card.
